Soran University Commemorates Halabja Catastrophe

On the 16th of March 1988, the former Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein bombarded chemical weapons on the people of Halabja city. This infamous action was against all humanistic terms and it caused the death of more than 5000 innocent citizens.

This catastrophe occurred 27 years before now, but on the 16th March of every year it is commemorated by Kurdish people inside and outside Kurdistan. On this day, Kurdish people stand in five minutes’ silence, from 11:00 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.

As usual, Soran University commemorated this day in front of the University Presidency building in presence of Dr Muslih Mustafa, President of Soran University, and a large number of other academics and employees from Soran University. All faculties of Soran University commemorated this day in their campus as well.

The Halabja Chemical Bombardment is listed along with other chemical catastrophes such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki as the most violent tragedies of Twentieth Century. According to Gunnies Records, the death toll of Halabja catastrophe is more than any other chemical bombardment.
