On the 24th February 2015, a seminar was held in the Seminar Hall at the Faculty of Arts to celebrate ‘International Mother Tongue Day’, which is held annually on the 21st February 2015. The seminar was presented by Dr Said Shams, Mr Handren, and Mr Sudad Rasul. They discussed the importance of the mother tongue and the current status of the Kurdish language.
A large number of lecturers and students were present at the seminar where the following subjects were tackled:
- The status of Kurdish language in the four areas of Kurdistan and the attempts of colonizers (neighbouring countries) to eradicate it.
- Standard Kurdish language and the factors behind not having and agreeing to have a standard language.
- Multilingualism in Kurdistan.
- Double-standards in Kurdistan.
All three presenters agreed that attention and value should be paid to the Kurdish language because it is about to lose its honor. They also agreed that a possible standard and unified language is a political subject and cannot be easily acquired. They concluded that each Kurdish individual has a responsibility to solve this problem.
At the end of the seminar, which lasted for two hours, the attendees expressed their views and additional comments on the topic.
Soran University organizes various events annually to promote International Mother Tongue Day.
