The Kurdistan Parliament has appointed December the 17th of every year as the Kurdistan Flag Day. In all the cities and towns of Kurdistan this day is commemorated with various events. As usual, Soran University held a number of events for this day.
The day was remembered at the Faculty of Arts in the presence of Dr Muslih Mustafa, President of Soran University, Dr Yadgar Rasul, Vice President for Students’ Affairs, Dr Nahro Zagros, Acting Vice President for Scientific Affairs, and Dr Qais Kakl ,Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and a number of lecturers and students.
First everyone sang the “Ay Raqib (Hey Enemy)” anthem and then stood for a minute’s silence in memory of the souls of the martyrs. Dr Qais Kakl gave a talk and commended this day. He then talked about the importance of flags in general and the Kurdistan flag in particular.
After this speech, the President of Soran University, Dr Muslih Mustafa, gave a talk. "At the foot of Korek, Handren, Zozk, and Bradost mountains, we commemorate Kurdistan Flag Day. I congratulate the Kurdish people and on this day I honour the martyrs of Kurdistan" He said. He also talked about the importance of the Kurdish flag throughout the history of Kurdish freedom, he also said that Kurds have given a lot of victims for the sake of keeping this flag's dignity.
As part of the event, Dr Said Shams and Dr Rashid Krmanj gave talks, and then poems were read by students.
Many students and lecturers of the Faculty wore Kurdish traditional clothes to honour the day.
Dr Muslih Mustafa, in honour of this day of the Kurdish flag, inaugurated two laboratories for studying in Faculty of Arts.
The Kurdistan Flag Day was also commemorated in the Faculty of Education with an event. In the activity, the Dean of Faculty of Education, Dr Hiwa Balisane, and Mamosta Sudad Rasul were present. Student and lecturers also wore Kurdish traditional clothes.
Although the students of this faculty were demonstrating against a decree by the Syndicate of Lawyers, they honoured the Kurdistan Flag Day by wearing Kurdish traditional clothes.
