People Who Influenced The Region

A.M. Hamilton, a civil engineer from New Zealand, has linked his name to Kurdistan by constructing the historic Hamilton Road that connects today’s capital Erbil and Ruwandez, and extends all the way to the Iranian border.

The construction that took place between 1928 and 1932 is considered quite the engineering accomplishment for the time as the road had to cross deep gorges, rocky mountains, and rough rivers.

In 1937 Hamilton wrote a memoir of his experience entitled Road through Kurdistan: Travels in Northern Iraq, where he describes the nature and the people of the area.
